ABOUT THE ALBUM

Sympraxis brings together mandolin players from Crete, Greece and around the world. The producers of this album, Rory Lindsay, Dina Wang, and Avery Lindsay, first conceived of it as a tribute to the luthier Ioannis Skoulas of Crete. The Greek word sympraxis (σύμπραξις) means "partnership," "collaboration," and "cooperation." In the spirit of this term, this album features collaborations and solo performances in a mix of genres and styles. It features multiple instruments made by Ioannis, including his mandolins, mandolas, an octave mandolin, a baglamas, and a tzouras, as well as many other instruments originating from inside and outside Greece.

Ioannis comes from an extended family of musicians. He trained as a luthier in Italy at Scuola di liuteria di Gubbio with headmaster Guerriero Spataffi and Ildebrando Minelli. He lived and worked there for a decade before returning home to Crete, where he devoted his time to building mandolins, both bowl and flat back. Many Cretan musicians play his mandolins. Over the past several decades, players from many regions including Greece, Turkey, Algeria, India, the United States, and Canada have begun using his instruments.

Rory, Dina, and Avery extend their sincere gratitude to Ioannis for the many years of friendship and for all the wonderful instruments that he has created.

Ο Rory, Dina, and Avery
